What is a headless CMS?

A headless CMS is a system that manages only content and delivers it through APIs to any channel: website, app, kiosk, configurator or other software.

In a traditional CMS, the management panel and the visible part of the site are a single block. In the headless approach (literally "without a head") the CMS becomes a central source of content, while presentation is handled by separate front ends. It is useful when the same texts, products or technical sheets need to appear in several places, for example on the website and in an app for sales agents. We assess it with the companies in Como, Brianza and Milan that we work with from Cantù, only when it brings a concrete advantage.

Headless or traditional

An enterprise CMS can work both ways

An enterprise CMS can generate the site's pages directly or expose content through APIs, or work in a mixed mode. This lets you start with a classic business website and open new channels later without duplicating content.

  • A single editorial team for the website and applications
  • Synchronised multilingual content
  • Integration with ERP, CRM and PIM

It is not always needed: for many business websites the traditional approach is simpler and more efficient. We assess it together during the analysis phase.

A website full of plugins depends on third-party code that has to be updated and made to work together: more plugins mean more risk of conflicts, slowdowns and vulnerabilities. In Cantù we develop for companies in Como and Milan on an enterprise CMS, with the essential features in the core and the rest bespoke.

In a CMS, roles and permissions are managed by assigning each user a profile that defines which sections, languages and media they can view, edit or publish. With an enterprise CMS, like those we develop in Cantù for companies in Como and Milan, they are native and suit teams with several editors and branches.

An enterprise open source CMS has no licence costs: you don't pay per user, site or language, and the site is not tied to a single vendor. The investment covers bespoke development, managed hosting and maintenance, which in Cantù we handle for companies in Como, Brianza and Milan.

The site and CMS should be updated regularly: security patches as soon as they are released, minor updates on a schedule, and major versions planned and tested before going live. The right cadence depends on the site's CMS, libraries and integrations; in Cantù we define it with each company.

To redesign a website in Como without losing rankings you need an agency that handles development and SEO migration together. NewVisibility, in Cantù, maps the old site's URLs, sets up 301 redirects, develops on an enterprise CMS with an in-house team and hosts the site on our own managed servers.
