How often should the site and CMS be updated?

Update frequency

Update regularly, not only when something breaks

The site and CMS should be updated regularly: security updates as soon as they are released, minor ones on a schedule, and major versions planned like small projects, with testing before going live.

There is no cadence that suits everyone: it depends on the CMS, the libraries used and how far the site is integrated with other systems; in Cantù we define it together with each company. Putting it off for too long, however, turns a simple update into a demanding migration.

Types of update

What gets updated and with what logic

On a site developed with our enterprise CMS updates follow different levels. Compared with a WordPress site full of plugins, there are fewer components to align and fewer conflicts between them.

Security patches
They fix known vulnerabilities: they must be applied first.
Minor updates
Compatible fixes and improvements, collected and released on a schedule.
Major versions
They change parts of the CMS or framework: they are planned, tested in a separate environment and then published.
Content
Text, images and pages: updating them often also helps SEO and visibility in AI engines.

The NewVisibility team

The people behind every update

Updates are done by those who developed the site, in Cantù: they know the code and where to look before publishing.

A website backup is a periodic copy of the database, files and media archive, stored separately from the site. It lets you restore everything or just part of it after an error, a failed update or an attack, as long as restoring is tested: the Cantù team, in the province of Como, takes care of it.

The SSL certificate encrypts data between browser and site and enables HTTPS: without it, browsers flag the site as not secure, affecting trust, forms and rankings. During maintenance we also check that pages and resources really use HTTPS, for companies in Como, Brianza and Milan.

Website monitoring combines automatic checks that verify the site responds and send alerts, periodic analysis of speed and Core Web Vitals, and review of logs and errors. This way problems surface before visitors notice them, including for companies in Como and Milan.

The main signs are slow pages that suit smartphones poorly, visits that don't turn into enquiries, outdated content, complicated management and dated design. If you recognise more than one, consider a website redesign: from our Cantù studio we help companies in Como and Brianza decide.

A website full of plugins depends on third-party code that has to be updated and made to work together: more plugins mean more risk of conflicts, slowdowns and vulnerabilities. In Cantù we develop for companies in Como and Milan on an enterprise CMS, with the essential features in the core and the rest bespoke.
