DNS (Domain Name System) is the system that translates a domain name into the address of the server to connect to.

When you type a website's address, your device asks the DNS where that domain is and receives the server's address in reply. The same happens for email: the DNS tells it which server to deliver messages to. Without this "phone book" we would have to remember long strings of numbers instead of names like your company's. In Cantù, in the province of Como, we see the effects every day in our clients' websites and mailboxes.

In short

What DNS does for your domain

Behind a simple address there are several steps, all governed by the DNS zone.

Website
They send visitors to the right server
Email
They say where to deliver business email
Verification
They prove ownership of the domain to external services

A, CNAME and MX records are entries in the DNS zone: A links the domain to the server's address, CNAME creates an alias to another name, MX says where to deliver email. A mistake can block website or email: in Como and Brianza we check them from our Cantù office.

DNS propagation is the time it takes for a change to the records to spread across the network, because many servers keep the old copy for a while. It depends on TTL and caching, so it needs planning: for companies between Como, Milan and Lugano we do it without downtime.

Nameservers are the servers that hold the domain's DNS zone and say where website and email are located. Changing them moves the management of all records, so it is best to copy the current zone first. We take care of it from Cantù for companies in Como and Brianza.

With a well-prepared move, the website stays online during the domain transfer, because the new environment is copied and tested before the destination is switched. Absolutely no interruption cannot be guaranteed, but good planning reduces it: we handle it from Cantù for companies between Como and Milan.

SPF, DKIM and DMARC are three email authentication systems: SPF lists the servers authorised to send, DKIM signs the message, DMARC decides what to do if the checks fail. They are good practice for businesses in Como, Milan and Lugano.
