Development of an interactive application for trade fairs

A good user experience is essential to the success of a digital project. Whether it’s a website, an app or a product, engaging the user and making their life easier is a service that can influence their decision to buy. For Rattiinox, we developed an interactive app designed for use at trade fairs.

The problem to be solved was a practical one. At a trade fair stand, a company that manufactures components for aseptic systems has just a few minutes to explain to a visitor how a complex system works, and the components on their own, displayed on a table, do not convey the process of which they form part.

The app addresses this with an interactive system diagram. The visitor sees a representation of the system and, by tapping a point, accesses video content explaining that component: from how tank-bottom valves work to sensors, right through to in-line cleaning and sterilisation processes, which are the most significant technical issue in the pharmaceutical sector.

It is a solution that changes the role of the sales representative at a trade fair. Instead of simply describing the system, they demonstrate it and can then leave the visitor to explore independently whilst attending to another prospect. The content is organised into short episodes, each lasting just a few minutes – a format that holds the viewer’s attention in a noisy and distracting environment such as a trade fair stand.

At a trade fair, you only have a few minutes and there’s a lot of noise

A trade fair is a hostile environment for any kind of content: noise, a constant flow of people, and visitors who only spare a few minutes. A catalogue or a traditional presentation cannot cope with that situation, and components displayed on a table do not convey the process of which they form part.

Hence the idea of an interactive plant diagram: the visitor taps a point and watches a video explaining that component, in episodes lasting just a few minutes. The sales representative’s role also changes, as they can leave one person to explore whilst attending to another. Designing for the real-world context of use – rather than for how the content would look on a screen – is what determines whether the tool is actually used.

NewVisibility was founded in 2013 from an idea by Andrea and Luca, lifelong friends who had already been building websites for several years before giving themselves a name. Since then, we have worked with over three hundred clients. We’re a team on a human scale: you speak directly to the people working on your project, with no middlemen, even after launch.

NewVisibility, a web development agency based in Cantù, in the province of Como, which designed the interactive diagram and the organisation of the video content.

It shows a diagram of the plant and, when you tap a component, opens the video that explains how it works and its role within the process.

Because at a stand you have a few minutes and a lot of noise. A component displayed on a table does not tell the story of the process it belongs to; an interactive video does.

How the individual components work and the technical processes that involve them, such as in-line cleaning and sterilisation procedures in aseptic plants.

It lets them show instead of describe, and leave a visitor to explore independently while they look after another contact.

Because attention is limited in a distracting environment. Episodes of a few minutes can be completed in the time a visitor actually gives a stand.

Yes. We design digital tools for specific contexts, from trade fair applications to configurators, when a website alone does not solve the problem.
