A sanitisable support instead of a paper menu

Menu digitisation for a restaurant

During the Covid emergency in 2020, restaurants faced the problem of paper menus, which could no longer be shared between different customers for hygiene reasons. Our web agency therefore proposed to the Il Diavolo L'acqua Santa restaurant in Como the digitisation of its menu, reachable through a QR code printed on an easily sanitised forex support.

The choice of support is not a minor detail. Forex is a rigid material that can be wiped with a cloth between one table and the next, and this solved at the root the problem posed by the paper menu: an object that passes from hand to hand and cannot be sanitised. The QR code printed on that support stays valid over time, because it points to a page of the website and not to the menu content.

On the technical side, the most important decision was not to develop an app. At that time many venues were turning to apps to download, which created insurmountable friction for a customer sitting at the table: scanning the code instead opens the browser directly, with no installation and no account.

The second advantage is operational and holds beyond the emergency. The menu lives inside the restaurant's website, so a price change or a seasonal dish is updated like any other content, without reprinting anything. In a venue with several dining rooms and separate menus, this is an operational saving that repeats with every change of season.

A solution born from an emergency, kept because it is useful

In 2020 many venues were turning to downloadable apps for viewing the menu. For a customer sitting at the table, with a few minutes and perhaps a weak connection, downloading an app is an obstacle most people do not get past. We made the opposite choice, building the menu on the existing website so that the QR code simply opened the browser.

It is a decision that reflects one of the three values we work by, simplicity. And it had an effect that remained useful well beyond the emergency: the menu is updated like any other content on the website, without reprints, which in a venue with several dining rooms and different menus makes a real difference at every change of season.

NewVisibility was founded in 2013 by Andrea and Luca, lifelong friends who had already been building websites for several years before giving themselves a name. Since then we have worked with more than three hundred clients. We are a human-sized team: you talk directly to the people working on your project, with no intermediaries, even after launch.

NewVisibility, a web agency in the province of Como, which proposed and built the QR code menu system and the table supports for the restaurant.

The customer scans the code printed on the table support and the menu opens in the browser, on the restaurant's website, with no app to download.

Because it is a rigid material that can be wiped with a cloth between one table and the next, solving at the root the hygiene problem posed by the paper menu.

No, and that was a deliberate choice. An app introduces friction most customers sitting at the table do not get past: the browser is already on every smartphone.

No. The QR code points to a page of the website, so it stays valid whatever changes in the content: the supports are printed only once.

Yes. It was born from an emergency but solves a pre-existing problem: a paper menu is expensive to update, especially in a venue with several dining rooms and seasonal menus.

Yes, we work with several businesses in the Como and Cantù area, both on websites and on operational tools such as menu digitisation.
