International World Wide Web Day: some facts about the network that changed our lives

Today, 1 August, is International World Wide Web Day, the service that lets us browse the Internet and makes possible most of our daily activities, from work to private life, from sport to travel.

On this special day dedicated to the www, our communication agency in Cantù has gathered a few curious facts about this invention that has revolutionised the way we live:

  • on 6 August 1991 the first website in history was born, info.cern.ch, and exactly 17 days later a user outside CERN (the research centre in Geneva) viewed its content for the first time
  • the term "World Wide Web" was born in 1995 and refers to the set of all the pages uploaded to the network, what we commonly call "the Internet", which was born as far back as 1969
  • in these 29 years web users have grown from 1 to 3.5 billion worldwide, almost half of the world's population
  • in 2003 another revolution took place: the advent of social media such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram, which completely changed the communication model, until then held by traditional media, TV and radio
  • since 2005 mobile phones have also connected to the network, allowing us to access the virtual world at any time and in any place

And the road ahead of us is still long and full of surprises. What awaits us in the future on the web? Its inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, has clear ideas:

"I don't have predictions about the future of the web, I have hopes. We can build a better web. Through the network we can fix our democracies and put them in a position to tackle urgent emergencies such as climate change"

We at NewVisibility are convinced that use of the network can make the search for useful information in our daily lives even simpler, which is why we always recommend having a website that is constantly updated, both in its content and in the technology used to build it, so as to make your company's communication with your customers and potential customers ever simpler and more immediate.
